If you are actively looking for a new job, you are likely to use the internet to your advantage. A quick search online can produce hundreds of job search sites. Moreover, there are some search sites that let you search those hundreds of job sites at once! Either way, you'll likely come across a number of jobs that sound appealing to you. But wait! Are they the best jobs for you; should you apply? When it comes to deciding which listings to respond to, please try to first answer these questions, as they can help you decide on the best course of action.
Job Search Question: Do you meet the company's job requirements?
99% percent of the time, you'll find that online job listings have a requirement section. Here, is it outlined what companies expect from applicants. Lets look at retail store positions, a cashier might be required to have a high school education or a GED; a stocker might be required to have a schooling or be in the process of obtaining it; a store manager might need to have five years management experience and a bachelor's degree in business management. You will find a job faster when you apply for jobs that you are qualified for.
Job Search Question: Can you do the tasks or duties that the job requires?
In addition to posting the job title, most companies will also outline specific duties or tasks that the position calls for. For example, a retail store manager might be responsible for scheduling, interviewing, hiring, terminating, training, and managing employees. Whether it be for retail management or another position, make sure you can perform all or most of the tasks expected of you. For instance, an office secretary should already know how to use a multi-line phone system; you are at a disadvantage if you will need training while on the job.
Job Search Question: Is this a job that I can see myself doing in five years?
Unless you are a high school student or a college student who is looking for a part-time job to raise some extra spending money, you should not apply for or accept just any job you can find. Not every single employed American in the United States 100% loves their job, but you at least want to be somewhat happy. There is nothing like being stuck in a job you loathe. If it comes down to needing a job to put food on the table, go right ahead and find just about any job you can. But if you have the freedom to pick and choose the jobs you apply for, aim for positions that you are not only qualified for, but positions in which you'll actually enjoy going to work.
